Partial Knee Replacement

Shown above - The Oxford™ Unicompartmental Knee System

In some situations, only a portion of the knee is diseased. In these cases where only one side of the knee or the other is worn out, a uni-compartment knee replacement may be used. The uni-compartment knee is designed to resurface only half of the knee, leaving the rest of the knee intact. Because only one side of the knee is replaced, less of your bone is removed and recovery time is usually quicker than it is for someone who has a total knee replacement.

No matter whether a total knee replacement or a uni-compartment knee replacement is performed, the prostheses are generally attached with cement. A cemented prosthesis is held in place by a type of epoxy cement that attaches the metal to the bone.

The choice of implant is usually made by the surgeon and is based on your health, age lifestyle and the surgeon’s experience.

Today, our orthopedic surgeons can replace your problem joint thanks to the development of implants, which have been shown to help provide long-term relief. Total joint replacement is usually a successful operation that has enabled may people to be more active and experience less pain. Most long-term studies now report that at ten years after surgery 90-95% of the implants are still functioning well.
